We went to Kahi to cut the ribbon on a brand new protected water source.  When we approached the Area Development Project the whole village was singing.  When I asked Joy (Program Dir. for World Vision Rwanda – National Office) what the families were singing she replied “No More Disease, we have Clean Water Now”.  It was a very emotional for all of us.

Can you imagine not being able to protect your child from disease because you didn’t have access to clean water?

I arrived in Kigali, Rwanda Sunday at 7pm…1pm Toronto time with the Courage Brothers and World Vision.  A 7 hour flight to Brussells and another 8 hours to Rwanda.  The Courage Brothers have been organizing the Polar Bear dip for 25 years and for the last 14 have been directing the money raised to Water Projects in Africa through World Vision – Love those guys!!  World Vision wanted to show the boys (Todd & Trent) just how much impact their support is having in the lives of people in Rwanda.  On Monday we woke up at 5am to visit an Area Development Program with World Vision in Kahi.  It is a 2 1/2 hour drive from our Hotel. It was a pretty emotional yet joyful day.  I’ll have lot’s of pics and video when I get back on Monday

Please visit www.worldvision.ca to learn how you can help

or go to www.polarbeardip.ca to find out about the 2010 dip to raise money for World Vision

and of course we will be doing our annual pre-dip in Lake Ontario this December to promote the event on January 1st.

Elmvale Celebrates 30 years of Horticulture

Frankie Flowers with Keith and Carolyn Squires

Frankie Flowers with Keith and Carolyn Squires

Horticulture which is really just a fancy word for the world of gardening has deep roots right across Canada and here in Ontario.  One of the best resources for new gardeners is to join their local horticultural society or garden club www.gardenontario.org.

Garden club meetings are great ways to network with fellow gardeners from your community.  People who garden in your community know what works and what doesn’t they also have the tips and tricks passed along from generations helping to create great gardens.

The village of Elmvale celebrated 30 years of horticultural this weekend as a part of their celebration I along with Keith Squires of The Country Squires Garden spoke. Keith along with his wife Carolyn are the kind of people I adore.  A couple passionate about plants with a mission to educate people on great ways of gardening.  Here are just a few comments I found on the web about Keith:

On July 10, 2008, janet59 from Brampton, Canada wrote:

This is an utterly amazing place. Over 2000 different types of perrenials that are tested over 5 years for hardiness before going up for sale. There is no greenhouse, just netting… I have never seen so many bees and butterflies in one place. While I was there a commercial buyer from Australia was selecting an order! Keith Squires is quite an elderly guy, but its clear he loves plants, and will talk to you for hours and answer your questions. Anyone who can, don’t miss this opportunity. You will never go back to Lowes or Home Depot again!!

On May 31, 2008, ShelaghStuart wrote:

WONDERFUL and knowledgeable, both Keith and Carolyn literally know each plant they sell. Most they have grown and cultivated themselves and are never too busy to answer questions or help you place them perfectly in your own garden. For the rare, the wonderful, or just plain beautiful every REAL garden lover in a 100 mile radius knows this place. (Just don’t tell anyone else about it!!) Thank you Keith and Carolyn for all your hard work – it is paying off in our back yards!

On May 29, 2007, June_Ontario from Rosemont, ON wrote:

Keith & Carolyn Squires grow a wide selection of truly hardy perennials, from tiny alpines to huge, back-of-the-border plants, plus vines, native plants, and dwarf trees and shrubs. The plants are grown and propagated on-site, and tested for hardiness. Whenever I visit, I always find some plant I have never seen before. To reach the nursery from the 401, go south through Campbellville and follow the winding road through escarpment woods and fields to Derry Road (the intersection has traffic lights); turn right (west) onto Derry Road, and the garden centre is on the right (north) side only a short distance. There are restaurants/cafes in Campbellville, if you need a rest break on your trip.

So if your ever in Campbellville Ontario go visit Keith and Carolyn and tell them Frankie Flowers sent you!!

After an amazing nation wide search, the original twelve are down to 6! All of them arrived looking as fresh and beautiful as ever to talk about the highly anticipated Ford Models Supermodel of the World Canada finale tomorrow night! I can’t imagine how they must feel…I’d be a ball of nerves but they seemed incredibly cool and collected on set today. They are constantly impressing me with how well they conduct themselves at such a young age. We also announced that Juno-winner Lights will be performing (very cool)…so get ready for it. We broadcast LIVE at 8pm tomorrow night and crown the winner on your station… CityTV! I’m so excited and proud of all of the girls….I know they will go far outside of this competition, …true beauties with loads of talent! Have a great Friday! Dina P.S A huge thank-you to the incredible LIVE studio audience who sat in with us this morning…all of you were so warm and lovely and we thank-you again for doing all that you did to make our new building the talk of the town! You ROCK!

Frankie’s Early Fall Gardening Checklist

posted on September 24th, 2009 - Filed in Uncategorized - 1 comment »

Garden mum - treat as annualFall is the time to spring into gardening!!  Seriously most think spring is the best time to garden but fall is just as good and in my mind a better time to garden.  Fall is the perfect planting season as ground temperatures are warm, rain is more frequent, evenings are cool and daylight is not as strong meaning plants have the best chance of establishing healthy roots before winter sets in.  Fall is a great time to save.  Many Garden Centres and Home Do-it centres are looking to get rid of their garden gear and plant material before the deep meaning now is the time to SAVE BIG!!  Discounts in the range of 30 to 70% are typical.  The next savings…time invested now will save you time in the spring!!

My checklist:

Flower Garden:

-         Amend Soil with manure or triple mix…frost and thaws of winter will naturally help to mix the soil in.

-         Plant Spring flowering bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, crocus, alliums etc.

-         Design, plan and plant new gardens. From trees, shrubs to evergreens and ornamentals including perennials now is the perfect time to save $$ and plant.

-         Plant pansies, mums, flowering cabbage and kale for late season garden interest.

-         Divide perennials.

-         Remove weeds.

-         Edge.

-         Water established trees and shrubs, cut out any fertilization.

-         Compost

Vegetable Garden:

-Amend Soil.

-Plant Garlic.

-Remove weeds.

-In harvested sections sow green manure to replenish nutrients.

-Keep it clean.  Remove leaves, spent flowers, and rotten veggies.

-Compost.

Lawns

-         Repair patches and reseed.

-         Fall application of slow release fertilizer.

-         High use / compacted areas aerate.

-         If leaves start to fall remove off the lawn before they become matted.  Matted leaves suffocate and kill lawns.

Containers:

-         Spent tired looking containers can be emptied and flipped for winter storage.  Remember clay and some plastic containers will freeze solid and crack if water or soil remains overwinter.  For clay best storage is indoors.

-         Entrance urns or containers add in a fall look by planting with fall flowering annuals, accessorizing with gourds, pie pumpkins, Indian corn etc.

Finally enjoy fall final explosion of colour!!!

In the coming weeks I will follow up with an additional late fall checklist detailing things you should do to overwinter your garden and also to insure your gardening tools will remain in tip top shape for next season.

Oak Leaf Hydrangea -fall colour

Keep Blooming,

Frankie
