Elmvale Celebrates 30 years of Horticulture

Frankie Flowers with Keith and Carolyn Squires

Horticulture which is really just a fancy word for the world of gardening has deep roots right across Canada and here in Ontario.  One of the best resources for new gardeners is to join their local horticultural society or garden club www.gardenontario.org.

Garden club meetings are great ways to network with fellow gardeners from your community.  People who garden in your community know what works and what doesn’t they also have the tips and tricks passed along from generations helping to create great gardens.

The village of Elmvale celebrated 30 years of horticultural this weekend as a part of their celebration I along with Keith Squires of The Country Squires Garden spoke. Keith along with his wife Carolyn are the kind of people I adore.  A couple passionate about plants with a mission to educate people on great ways of gardening.  Here are just a few comments I found on the web about Keith:

This is an utterly amazing place. Over 2000 different types of perrenials that are tested over 5 years for hardiness before going up for sale. There is no greenhouse, just netting… I have never seen so many bees and butterflies in one place. While I was there a commercial buyer from Australia was selecting an order! Keith Squires is quite an elderly guy, but its clear he loves plants, and will talk to you for hours and answer your questions. Anyone who can, don’t miss this opportunity. You will never go back to Lowes or Home Depot again!!

WONDERFUL and knowledgeable, both Keith and Carolyn literally know each plant they sell. Most they have grown and cultivated themselves and are never too busy to answer questions or help you place them perfectly in your own garden. For the rare, the wonderful, or just plain beautiful every REAL garden lover in a 100 mile radius knows this place. (Just don’t tell anyone else about it!!) Thank you Keith and Carolyn for all your hard work – it is paying off in our back yards!

Keith & Carolyn Squires grow a wide selection of truly hardy perennials, from tiny alpines to huge, back-of-the-border plants, plus vines, native plants, and dwarf trees and shrubs. The plants are grown and propagated on-site, and tested for hardiness. Whenever I visit, I always find some plant I have never seen before. To reach the nursery from the 401, go south through Campbellville and follow the winding road through escarpment woods and fields to Derry Road (the intersection has traffic lights); turn right (west) onto Derry Road, and the garden centre is on the right (north) side only a short distance. There are restaurants/cafes in Campbellville, if you need a rest break on your trip.

Hey,you were incorrect in naming the long variety of squash as spaghetti squash. It is not so; it’s an italian squash or cuccusi squash. Please check your sources, after all you are THE gardening specialist, right?

You are totally correct about this!! I just watched the segment again!! I was thinking Italian Squash but it came out as spaghetti squash. The thing about live TV is you can’t proof read yourself. Italian – Spaghetti….I was just thinking about my meal from the night before…ooops that you for the correction!!
